Description
The Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education (PGDHE) aims to provide the pedagogical skills for professionals in Higher Education (HE) to reflect upon the key underlying educational philosophies, pedagogy, and experiences to enhance their academic practice. It will provide students/lecturers in the programme with opportunities to enhance their teaching skills and understanding of the issues affecting student learning in HE. The programme provides a practical and theoretical foundation in learning and teaching in HE and helps to create a scholarly, reflective, evidence‐based approach to improve professional practice. Graduates will be reflective practitioners and educational change agents with strong analytic, pedagogical skills, technological, critical, problem‐solving, and creative thinking skills to assist their students in becoming global citizens of the 21st Century, prepared for the fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the job market.
The programme aims to enhance students’ teaching, assessment, and curriculum development skills, as well as technology integration in HE. The graduates will be able to deliver inclusive, equitable, transformative quality education and promote opportunities for lifelong learning for their students through the application of emerging digital technologies and student‐centred learning approaches that encourage deep learning.
Admission Requirements
Applicants to this programme must hold at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent at NQF Level 7 from a recognised institution worth at least 360 NQF credits. Candidates applying to the programme are encouraged to be currently teaching in Higher Education (face-to-face or online) for the duration of the programme. Actual teaching is important because participants need access to students and teaching colleagues to complete the programme’s activities and assessments. These include, but are not limited to, multiple teaching observations; weekly written reflections on teaching and learning; students’ written experiences with innovative approaches introduced by the participants; evidence of providing high‐quality feedback on student assignments; and the entire classroom‐based action research project spanning two courses.
Candidates who are not currently teaching in Higher Education may apply to the programme provided they have secured their own Mentor (an experienced lecturer in Higher Education) who will provide direct support and mentorship to them throughout the duration of the programme (1‐3 years).
Articulation Arrangements
The transfer of credits will be dealt with according to the NUST’s regulations on Recognition of Prior Learning. These provide for course‐by‐course credits as well as credit transfer by volume under certain academic conditions. The maximum credit that can be granted is 50% of the credits for a qualification. The Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education can articulate further studies in the same, or a related cognate area, at NQF Level 9.
Mode of Delivery
This programme will be offered online. One course is offered The programme will be offered on a full‐time mode and part‐time mode of study through online delivery options and methodologies in accordance with NUST rules and regulations. Students have one year up to three years to complete the programme.
Requirements for Qualification Award
The Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education will be awarded to candidates credited with a minimum of 120 NQF credits at NQF Level 8, and who have met the detailed qualification requirements as outlined below. In addition, candidates must meet the administrative and financial requirements as outlined in the Postgraduate Prospectus of the Namibia University of Science and Technology.

Interested candidates can visit www.nust.na for admission requirements. Application forms are obtainable from the Registrar’s office or may be downloaded from the website. Completed application forms may be sent to the address below, together with all the required documentation and fees. A non-refundable application fee, in crossed postal orders/cheques, made out to NUST, should accompany the application forms.
When to Apply
The closing date for all applications is normally at the end of September, but prospective students are advised to visit the NUST website to ascertain the exact closing date. Applicants will be notified in writing as soon as possible after the closing date whether their applications for admission have been successful or not.
